The Sermon Starter Guide is used to gather useful information for preparing a sermon or Bible study (or doing basic research) on a topic or a biblical passage.
Accessing the Sermon Starter Guide
The standard way to generate a Sermon Starter Guide is from the Guides menu. But it can also be generated from other Guides and Tools, such as Factbook.
To generate a Sermon Starter Guide from the Guides menu:
- Click Guides > Sermon Starter Guide
. (Open the Sermon Starter guide in Logos)
- Enter a topic or biblical passage into the Preaching Theme box and press Enter.
Whether you enter a topic or a passage, the drop-down autocomplete menu provides a list of relevant options to choose from.
- Click Add on the guide’s toolbar to add any additional sections to your guide.
Using the Sermon Starter Guide
Scroll down the Sermon Starter Guide sections until you find ones that are relevant to your study. These might include:
Theme
The information shown in this section depends on whether the guide is run on a topic or a passage.
- If you’re studying a Topic, it provides links to other Tools, Guides, or Searches that offer more details on the Topic.
- If you’re studying a passage, it provides links to other topic-based Sermon Starter Guides drawn from themes that appear in the passage you’re studying.
Passages
This section (in a topic-based Sermon Starter Guide) displays information about Key Passages and Pericopes that are particularly relevant to the topic you’re studying.
Sermons
This section provides links to sermons in your library that were preached on either the topic or the passage. Click one to open the sermon text.
Preaching Resources
This section (in a topic-based Sermon Starter Guide) displays information about Preaching Resources in your library that provide illustrations, outlines, and other helpful insights for sermon or lesson preparation.
Sermon Outlines
This section provides links to Sermon Outlines on either the topic or the passage. Click one to open the outline.
Thematic Outlines
This section shows different themes associated with the topic, or referenced in the passage. There is also the option to specify the destination of any outline you choose to copy.
Click an outline to see the details, and click Copy to send the outline to the destination of your choice (as outlined above).
Commentaries
This section (which appears only in a passage-based Sermon Starter Guide) displays commentaries in your library with articles on the passage you’re studying. Click one to open the commentary to the relevant article.
Figurative Language
This section (which appears only in a passage-based Sermon Starter Guide) displays Figurative Language present in the passage you are studying. It also provides the option to search for other occurrences of the same type of language.
